Cubs’ Jon Lester Notches 2,000th Strikeout, Hits 1st Career Home Run

What a night for Chicago Cubs pitcher Jon Lester.

Lester, 33, hit his first career home run and became only the 25th left-hander in history to record 2,000 strikeouts during Chicago’s victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks 16-4 Tuesday night.

“It’s really cool,” Lester said. “I’ll celebrate tonight and move on to the next one. When it’s all said and done I’ll sit back and go through everything. For me, it’s really letting my kids know I was all right at my job.”

Lester becomes the 11th active pitcher and 4th left-handed pitcher to notch 2,000 strikouts joining the likes of CC Sabathia, Cole Hamels and Clayton Kershaw.

Lester is the 2nd pitcher after John Smoltz to homer and record his 2,000th strikeout in the same game, per Elias Sports Bureau.

“It was cool,” Lester said of achieving both milestones. “It’s something that you can’t really describe. But like I told you, I get paid to pitch. At the end of the day, it’s awesome, it’s great. I’m not downplaying it, but I’d rather take the win over that.”

Chicago Cubs shortstop Addison Russell has been suspended without pay for 40 games, retroactive to September 21st, the date he was placed on administrative leave, under Major League Baseball’s domestic violence policy, according to ESPN Chicago’s Jesse Rogers.

The league formally announced the suspension on Wednesday, and Russell will not appeal the suspension.

Russell was placed on administrative leave back in September amid allegations of physical and verbal abuse brought forward by his ex-wife, Melisa Reidy.

“My office has completed its investigation into the allegations that Addison Russell violated Major League Baseball’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy,” Manfred said in a statement. “Having reviewed all of the available evidence, I have concluded that Mr. Russell violated the Policy and should be subject to discipline in the form of an unpaid suspension that will cover 40 games.”
