Marlins’ Giancarlo Stanton Sets Team Record With 43rd Home Run

on

While the Miami Marlins may be struggling through yet another disappointing season, Giancarlo Stanton has given fans something to cheer about.

Stanton hit his team-record 43rd home run during the 5th inning of the Marlins’ victory over the San Francisco Giants on Monday night.

With his homer, Stanton passes Gary Sheffield who hit 42 homers for the team in 1996.

“When you’re one homer or one hit away from a record, you don’t want to let it linger because then every at-bat is, ‘Is he going to do it? Is he going to do it?'” Stanton said (h/t ESPN).

“So luckily I got it out of the way right away, put us on top, and able to finish.”

“A lot of good things happened where you play the kind of game you like to see,” Marlins manager Don Mattingly said.

“Obviously Giancarlo’s been incredible, but we know there’s going to be nights he’s not going to do it and we’re going to have to be able to score runs somehow.”

“He’s on a sick tear,” Marlins second baseman Dee Gordon said about Stanton. “He’s amazing.”

The Miami Marlins don’t plan on dealing left-hander Caleb Smith as the trade deadline approaches, according to MLB.com’s Joe Frisaro.

The Marlins have been stuck in what seems to be a never-ending rebuild and have traded off a ton of assets in recent seasons, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them selling off more talent at the deadline.

Smith, 27, who is currently on the 10-day IL due to some inflammation in his hip, has posted a 3.41 ERA through 66 innings this season.
