Yankees Confident Aroldis Chapman Is Healthy, Sat On Wednesday

Published

on

The New York Yankees have had their issues with the performance of closer Aroldis Chapman this season.

Quite frankly, he isn’t nearly as effective as he was for the team in 2016 and it has raised some questions about his overall health.

Chapman was kept out of Wednesday’s game with the New York Mets but the Yankees are confident the hurler is healthy.

“He will continue to be my closer,” Girardi said Wednesday’s game.

“We won’t close with him tonight because we’re going to let him go through some things. We think that his leg is not going to be an issue, but we want him to go through some things and make sure that it is OK.

“If everything he goes through today [is OK] and the trainer says he’s fine, he’ll be my closer tomorrow.”

The Yankees are not sending Chapman in for an MRI.

Chapman has struggled since coming back from the disabled list in June due to shoulder inflammation, going 9-for-12 in save opportunities with a 4.09 ERA to boot.

“I have a ton of confidence in him,” Girardi said of Chapman. “He’s too good not to get back on track. He’s going through a little blip here and we’ll get him right.”
