Yankees Take Aroldis Chapman Out Of Closer Roll

Published

on

The New York Yankees have seen enough of Aroldis Chapman as their closer and manager Joe Girardi has made a change.

Girardi said that Chapman, in the worst skid of his career, is being taken out of the closer role to work through some location issues opting to go instead with Dellin Betances and David Robertson, based on the situation.

Girardi said the Chapman will be used “at any point”.

“When we get him going like I believe he will get going, there’s a good chance I’ll put him back in that closer’s role,” Girardi said.

Girardi said that an injury is not to blame for Chapman’s struggles of late.

Against the division rival (and leading) Boston Red Sox, Chapman has a  in seven appearances (6.1 IP, 7 ER, 10 BB, 7 K).

“He knows that he needs to get back on track and that he’s scuffled a little bit,” Girardi said. “But he said, ‘I’m willing to do anything. I just want to win.'”
