Masahiro Tanaka To Stay With Yankees For At Least Three More Seasons

Published

on

There will be no free agency this offseason for New York Yankees starting pitcher Masahiro Tanaka, as he’s decided to remain with the team for at least three more seasons.

Prior to the start of the 2014 season, Tanaka signed a seven-year, $155 million deal with New York which included an opt-out clause after the first four years.

Tanaka, 29, said the following in a statement released by the Yankees on Friday:

“I have decided to stay with the Yankees for the next three seasons. It was a simple decision for me as I have truly enjoyed the past four years playing for this organization and for the wonderful fans of New York. I’m excited to continue to be a part of this team, and I’m committed to our goal of bringing a World Series championship back to the Steinbrenner family, the Yankees organization and the great fans of New York.”

The Yankees owe Tanaka $67 million over the next three years.

Tanaka went 13-12 with a 4.74 ERA in 30 starts for the Yankees in 2017. His ERA was by far a career high, shattering his previous marks of 2.77, 3.51, and 3.07 (’14, ’15, and ’16 respectively).

Despite his mediocre regular season, Tanaka pitched well in the playoffs, going 2-1 with a 0.90 ERA in three starts. He also finished particularly well at Yankee Stadium- in his final eight starts (two in the playoffs) there, Tanaka was 7-1 with a 0.96 ERA.

Overall in four seasons with New York, Tanaka’s 52-28 with a 3.56 ERA in 105 games/starts.
