Giants’ Ace Madison Bumgarner Has Been Cleared To Begin Throwing

Published

on

The San Francisco Giants have been without left-hander Madison Bumgarner for the first month of the season, but it appears as though their ace could be returning to the rotation soon.

According to Amy Gutierrez of NBC Sports Bay Area, Bumgarner’s hand is healing well and he can begin throwing this weekend.

This is good news for the Giants, who have been decimated by injuries this season. Right-hander Johnny Cueto was just placed on the 10-day disabled list due to right elbow inflammation. The Giants closer, Mark Melancon, is currently on the 60-day disabled list with a strained right elbow.

Bumgarner has been sidelined ever since getting struck by a line drive hit by Whit Merrifield of the Kansas City Royals in spring training. He suffered a broken pinkie in his left hand on the play, and he ended up having surgery the next day. The surgery was performed by hand specialist Dr. Donald Sheridan. It involved pins being inserted into Bumgarner’s left pinkie.

In 17 starts last season, Bumgarner went 4-9 with a 3.32 ERA.
