Shogo Akiyama Files for Free Agency in Hopes of MLB Deal

Nippon Professional Baseball center fielder Shogo Akiyama has informed the Seibu Lions his intentions to file for free agency so he can land an MLB deal, according to NPB writer Jim Allen.

Akiyama, 31, is a .301 lifetime hitter with strong plate discipline and a rising power streak that has been on display the past few seasons, hitting 69 homers over the past three seasons.

Akiyama has a reputation for his glovework but he seems to have declined a bit in that aspect.

Akiyama is now an international free agent, meaning he’s free to sign with any team in any league in the world without going through a posting system.

Royals Name Mike Matheny Manager

The Kansas City Royals have officially named Mike Matheny as their new manager, via a team announcement.

“Our entire organization is delighted to announce and celebrate the hiring of Mike Matheny,” Royals general manager Dayton Moore said in a statement. “Every department has had the pleasure to work and interact with him this past season. Through this interaction, it became very clear to our leadership team that Mike is the obvious person to lead our baseball team. Mike Matheny is a passionate leader with strong virtues, intelligence, and a relentless commitment to help players reach their full potential.”

Matheny, 49, played 13 seasons in the majors and then had a solid run as the manager of the St. Louis Cardinals from 2012 up until the midway point of the 2018 season.

Phillies Hire Bryan Price As Pitching Coach

The Philadelphia Phillies have hired Bryan Price as their new pitching coach, according to The Athletic’s Matt Gelb.

Price, 57, was the manager of the Cincinnati Reds from 2014 until 2017, and will now join the staff of new Phillies’ manager Joe Girardi, who was recently hired to take the helm.

Price has experience as a pitching coach, doing so for a handful of teams prior to his stint as the Reds’ manager.

The Arizona Diamondbacks have hired Matt Herges as their new pitching coach, according to the Arizona Republic’s Nick Piecoro.

Herges will join the DBacks staff after spending the past two seasons as the bullpen coach of the San Francisco Giants.

Herges takes over for Mike Butcher in Arizona.
